Common faults of automotive turbochargers

11-07-2022

An automobile turbocharger is a device that can greatly increase the power of the engine without changing the structure of the engine. In theory, it can double the power of the original self-priming engine, and in fact, it can also increase by more than 30%. However, during the use of the supercharger, if the use and maintenance are improper, various faults will often occur. The following is a list of some common faults.

There is abnormal consumption of oil, but the power of the engine does not drop, and the color of the exhaust smoke is normal.

Cause of failure: The reason for this phenomenon is oil leakage

Solution:

1) First, check whether there is abnormal oil leakage outside the engine, especially the oil inlet and return pipes of the supercharger. If there is leakage, tighten it in time.

2) Open the turbo exhaust port of the supercharger and check whether there is oil. If there is, it can be concluded that the oil sealing ring of the turbo end is damaged, and the sealing ring of the turbo end needs to be replaced.

Cause of failure: oil leakage at the compressor end of the supercharger, the oil passes through the supercharger, and the engine intake pipe burns in the combustion chamber.

1) The oil return pipe of the supercharger is not smooth, and the oil accumulates too much at the intermediate bearing, and flows into the compressor impeller along the rotor shaft.

2) The oil seal at the compressor end of the supercharger is damaged, and the oil leaks into the impeller of the compressor.

Solution:

1) Open the outlet of the compressor end of the turbocharger, and check whether there are traces of oil on the pipe wall of the outlet. If so, first check whether the oil return pipe of the supercharger is unobstructed. If it is not smooth, clear the oil pipe and install it again to solve the problem.

2) If the oil return pipe of the supercharger is unobstructed, then the oil seal at the compressor end is damaged and needs to be disassembled and replaced with the shaft seal at the compressor end.
